Your body is your most essential instrument
Alyssa DeCaro has been a movement artist for over 30 years. Movement is her primary language. When multiple injuries derailed her, she discovered her body as her greatest teacher and vehicle revealing a new path based on inner wisdom. Yoga played a key role in Alyssa’s rehabilitation and became an essential part of her daily practice. During this time she immersed herself in music as a secondary outlet and she soon realized a love that would not take second place.
BODY OF SOUND WAS BORN After much experimentation and inquiry, Alyssa discovered body music as a way to blend her love of movement and sound. She began to approach creative expression from the inside out, from a somatic experience first and then shape it into a aesthetic musical form. She saw something missing from our society which seems to be deeply engrained in the majority of other cultures: Collective Singing and Dancing as celebration and ritual. The inspiration to shift this is how Body of Sound was birthed and it continues to evolve.
ALYSSA’S EXPERIENCE & TRAINING Alyssa has been exploring Yoga, Dance (Tap, Contact Improvisation, African, Hip-Hop, Modern, Ballet), Gymnastics and Martial Arts since the age of 3. She’s been drumming since marching band in middle school when the drums hung below her knees and she continues her love of rhythm in any instrument that has percussive capabilities. Her voice is perhaps the most intimate avenue of expression which has inspired the deep transformation and she studied Harmonic Singing and Speech-Level Singing. Alyssa performed with and choreographed for Gamelan X, a bali-bass groove music ensemble for 9 years. She has also collaborated with many other wonderful artists including Sam Rogers (The One Mouth Band), Evie Ladin and MoToR, and The One People Voice Company.
Alyssa has had the pleasure of studying with some amazing master teachers including Anna Halprin, Babatunde Olatunji, Ana Forrest, Vinn Marti, Suzanne Sterling, Keith Terry, Evie Ladin, Thomas Fortel and Max Thomas. She is a graduate of the Tamalpa Institute for Movement-Based Expressive Arts Therapy and has completed the “Soul Motion” Movement Leadership Training and the Forrest Yoga Teacher Certification. Alyssa developed her work and continues to offer courses at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California where she has been teaching classes and workshops since 2002. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Through the journey of teaching and performing, she is constantly amazed at the capacity of creative energy that is within each of us. Alyssa finds deep joy in drawing this out of people who may have temporarily forgotten how to access the source within. It is from her own dedicated practice that Alyssa finds the overflowing abundance of this work.
